Target Information
Adrenergic receptors (ARs) are members of the 7-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily that bind the endogenous catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine. These receptors exhibit significant heterogeneity, with nine subtypes identified: three alpha-1 (1A/D, 1B, 1C), three alpha-2 (2A, 2B, 2C), and three beta (1, 2, 3).
ARs are involved in disease states such as hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, diabetes, glaucoma, depression, and impotence. Beta-adrenergic receptors (BARs) regulate development, behavior, cardiac function, smooth muscle tone, and metabolism. Knockout studies of the B1AR gene show prenatal lethality and cardiac abnormalities. Thyroid hormones and catecholamine-sensitive adenylyl cyclase modulate B1AR transcription. cAMP and CREM family transcription factors further influence B1AR regulation.
