Target Information

Ubiquitin is a 76 amino acid, highly conserved eukaryotic polypeptide that selectively marks cellular proteins for proteolytic degradation by the 26S proteasome. This posttranslational modification regulates the concentrations of key regulatory proteins by limiting their lifespans. Polyubiquitination involves activation by E1, transfer to E2, and covalent linkage to the target protein directly or via E3 ligase. Deubiquitination enzymes reverse this process. Ubiquitin tagging is involved in numerous cellular processes, including cell cycle, growth, differentiation, apoptosis, signal transduction, DNA repair, transcription regulation, transport, stress responses, immune response, and nervous system functions.
