NEK8 (NIMA-related kinase 8)
NEK8 serine/threonine kinase is related to NIMA (never in mitosis, gene A) of Aspergillus nodulins and may play a role in cell cycle progression from G2 to M phase. NEK8 is part of a complex of ciliary proteins required for renal and cardiovascular development. It interacts with polycystin signaling pathways and may control the targeting of ciliary proteins. NEK8 is required for renal tubular integrity and may regulate local cytoskeletal structure in kidney tubule epithelial cells, as well as ciliary biogenesis through protein targeting.
Defects in NEK8 cause nephronophthisis type 9 (NPHP9) [MIM:613824], an autosomal recessive disorder leading to end-stage renal disease characterized by tubular modifications, basement membrane thickening, interstitial fibrosis, and medullary cysts.
