Target Information
Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins are essential for nuclear events requiring structural changes of chromosomes, such as mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression. These proteins are conserved in eukaryotes and are crucial for mitotic chromosome dynamics.
SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex required for metaphase progression and sister chromatid cohesion. Mutations in the SMC1A gene can lead to Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
