Target Information
Fis1 is a 17 kDa integral membrane protein and a key component of the mitochondrial fission machinery. It contains a central leucine-zipper domain, a coiled-coil region, a tetratricopeptide repeat domain, and a C-terminal transmembrane domain.
As a human orthologue of Fis1p (S. cerevisiae), Fis1 localizes to the outer mitochondrial membrane and functions as a pro-apoptotic factor regulating mitochondrial fission. It interacts with DLP1 and Mdv1p to facilitate Dnm1p recruitment to the fission complex, inducing apoptosis.
Fis1 also plays a role in peroxisome growth and division. Loss of Fis1 inhibits apoptosis and leads to elongation of mammalian mitochondria.
