Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators in multiple signaling pathways.
SMAD1 mediates signals from bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which regulate cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
SMAD1 is a target for SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
