This antibody detects endogenous levels of total KRT81 protein.
Target Information
The KRT81 gene encodes a type II hair keratin, a basic protein that heterodimerizes with type I keratins to form hair and nails. Type II hair keratins are located on chromosome 12q13 and divided into two subfamilies based on structural similarity.
- Subfamily 1: KRTHB1, KRTHB3, KRTHB6 (highly related)
- Subfamily 2: KRTHB2, KRTHB4, KRTHB5 (less related)
All hair keratins are expressed in the hair follicle. KRT81, along with KRTHB3 and KRTHB6, is primarily found in the hair cortex. Mutations in KRT81 and KRTHB6 have been associated with monilethrix, a rare dominant hair disease.
