Target Information
ACER3 is a protein coding gene. It encodes an endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi ceramidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of unsaturated long-chain ceramides (C18:1-, C20:1-, and C20:4-ceramides), dihydroceramides, and phytoceramides into sphingoid bases such as sphingosine and free fatty acids at alkaline pH.
Ceramides, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate are bioactive lipids that mediate cellular signaling pathways regulating biological processes including cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation.
ACER3 controls the generation of sphingosine in erythrocytes, influencing sphingosine-1-phosphate levels in plasma, and may play a role in neuronal survival and function through the regulation of ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate homeostasis in the brain. It may also modulate the inflammatory response by regulating proinflammatory ceramide levels in immune cells and tissues.
