Gene locus: 17q23.3
Members of the STE-20-like kinase family stimulate MAPK pathways by directly activating MAPKKK. STRAD is a pseudokinase member of this family, containing a STE-20-like kinase domain but lacking residues required for catalytic activity. It specifically binds LKB1 and regulates its tumor suppressor functions by acting as an upstream activator and directing its subcellular localization. STRAD-LKB1 interaction leads to phosphorylation of STRAD and enhances LKB1 autophosphorylation.
