UCK2 catalyzes the phosphorylation of uridine monophosphate to uridine diphosphate, initiating pyrimidine nucleoside triphosphate synthesis required for RNA and DNA production.
An allele of this gene may also contribute to nonhumoral immunity to Haemophilus influenzae type B.
