Target Information
MRPL42 is part of the mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal protein family, encoded by nuclear genes and involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
The MRPL42 gene encodes a protein identified in both 28S and 39S subunits. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 4q, 6p, 6q, 7p, and 15q.
