Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is then converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme found in all eukaryotes (32 kDa homodimer).
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme (80 kDa tetramer) located in the mitochondrial matrix, near the respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessels, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone that delivers Cu to SOD1, activating it by cofactor insertion.
