Target Information
The Keratin multigene family includes both “soft” epithelial cytokeratins and “hard” hair keratins.
Epithelial keratins contribute to epithelial structure, while hair keratins form nails and hair.
Keratin 84 (KRT84, HB4, KRTHB4) is a 600-amino-acid, basic/neutral type II keratin protein expressed in hair follicles.
It heterodimerizes with type I keratins to form structural components of hair and nails.
The KRT84 gene is located on human chromosome 12, which encodes over 1,100 genes (~4.5% of the genome) and is associated with disorders such as hypochondrogenesis, achondrogenesis, and Kniest dysplasia.
