Target Information
The product encoded by this gene belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play essential roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actins: Major components of the contractile apparatus in muscle.
- Beta and gamma actins: Involved in cell motility regulation.
This antibody recognizes alpha actin found in skeletal muscle. Mutations in this gene are associated with:
- Nemaline myopathy type 3
- Congenital myopathy with excess thin myofilaments
- Congenital myopathy with cores
- Congenital myopathy with fiber-type disproportion
These conditions lead to muscle fiber defects.
