Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein present in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It contains four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin is involved in the regulation of short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation 96.
