Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It contains four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin under high calcium conditions, implicating a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. It also participates in regulating short- and long-term synaptic plasticity. Synaptophysin is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation.
