SATB1 (DNA-binding protein SATB1)는 Xist RNA에 의해 매개되는 X 염색체 비활성화 과정에 관여하는 중요한 침묵화 인자입니다. 이 단백질은 AT-rich 서열 및 핵 매트릭스 관련 영역에 결합하며, 이중 가닥 DNA의 당-인산 골격 구조를 인식하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 SATB1은 DNA 매트릭스 부착 영역에 결합하여 국소 크로마틴 루프 재구성을 유도함으로써 전사 억제 기능을 수행합니다. 이는 T세포의 성숙 과정과 HIV-1 통합 기작에도 영향을 미치며, HIV-1 Tat 단백질은 SATB1 매개 억제 작용을 극복할 수 있습니다.
