Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions along with an anion, usually bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for transporting iron from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. Under normal conditions, about one-third of total blood transferrin contains bound iron. Measurement of blood transferrin levels serves as an indicator for iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities of iron metabolism, such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
