Target Information
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients with inherited forms of the disease carry mutations in presenilin proteins (PSEN1 or PSEN2) or amyloid precursor protein (APP). These mutations increase production of the longer form of amyloid-beta, the main component of amyloid deposits found in AD brains. Presenilins regulate APP processing through effects on gamma-secretase and are also involved in Notch receptor cleavage. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different PSEN2 isoforms have been identified.
