QPRT 유전자는 트립토판-니코틴아마이드 아데닌 디뉴클레오타이드 경로의 중간체인 퀴놀리네이트의 대사에 관여하는 주요 효소를 암호화합니다. 퀴놀리네이트는 신경세포에 대한 강력한 내인성 흥분독소로 작용하며, 뇌 내 퀴놀리네이트 농도의 증가는 간질, 알츠하이머병, 헌팅턴병 등 신경퇴행성 질환의 발병과 관련이 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사 변이체가 생성됩니다.
