Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological processes like arthritis and metastasis.
Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that are activated upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases.
The enzyme encoded by the MMP7 gene degrades proteoglycans, fibronectin, elastin, and casein, and differs from most MMP family members by lacking a conserved C-terminal protein domain.
It plays a role in wound healing and regulates defensin activity in intestinal mucosa.
The gene is part of a cluster of MMP genes located on chromosome 11q22.3.
