PITX1 belongs to the RIEG/PITX homeobox family, part of the bicoid class of homeodomain proteins. These proteins are involved in organ development and left-right asymmetry. PITX1 functions as a transcriptional regulator in basal and hormone-regulated activity of prolactin.
