ERK1 is widely expressed and regulates meiosis, mitosis, and post-mitotic functions in differentiated cells.
It responds to stimuli such as growth factors, cytokines, virus infection, GPCR ligands, and transforming agents.
Functionally, ERK1 participates in signaling cascades controlling proliferation, differentiation, and cell cycle progression.
Activated ERK1 translocates to the nucleus to phosphorylate nuclear targets.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms of ERK1 have been described.
