Target Information
DNA deaminase (cytidine deaminase) that inhibits retrovirus replication and retrotransposon mobility through both deaminase-dependent and -independent mechanisms.
A3H-var/haplotype 2 shows antiviral activity against vif-deficient HIV-1. After retroviral nucleocapsid penetration and initiation of reverse transcription, it induces cytosine-to-uracil conversion in minus-sense single-strand viral DNA, leading to G-to-A hypermutations in the plus-strand viral DNA.
This results in detrimental mutations and antiviral effects in infected cells. Selectively targets single-stranded DNA and does not act on double-stranded DNA or RNA. Also exhibits antiviral activity against HTLV-1 and may inhibit retrotransposon mobility.
