Target Information

The Drosophila atonal gene encodes a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains that are crucial for nervous system development. The mammalian homolog, Atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1, also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1), is a 351 amino acid HLH transcription factor structurally similar to the Drosophila proneural gene product.

In mice, MATH-1 expression begins around embryonic day 9.5, localizing to cranial ganglia and the dorsal CNS. By day 18, expression becomes restricted to the external granular layer of the cerebellum and is undetectable in adults. MATH-1 is believed to regulate the differentiation of neural cell subsets by activating E-box-dependent transcription.
