Target Information
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential cofactors for multiple mitochondrial and cellular enzymes. They contain sulfur and iron and are assembled through a series of steps involving cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, and scaffold proteins.
The ISCU gene encodes two isomeric forms, ISCU1 and ISCU2, which function as Fe-S cluster scaffold proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with myopathy characterized by severe exercise intolerance and myoglobinuria.
