Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a protein specific to animal mitoribosomes, with pseudogenes found on chromosomes 1p, 1q, 3p, 5q, 8q, 14q, and Y.
