Target Information
REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) is a transcriptional repressor that binds neuron-restrictive silencer elements (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts neuronal gene expression by associating with corepressors such as mSin3 and CoREST, which recruit histone deacetylase complexes to REST-regulated promoters. REST mediates repression by recruiting the BHC complex at RE1/NRSE sites, functioning as a chromatin modifier through histone deacetylation and demethylation.
