Target Information

WIBG is a key regulator of the exon junction complex (EJC), a multiprotein complex that associates immediately upstream of exon-exon junctions on mRNAs. It serves as a positional landmark for gene intron-exon structures and directs post-transcriptional processes such as mRNA export, nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), and translation.
WIBG acts as an EJC disassembly factor, enabling translation-dependent EJC removal and recycling by disrupting mature EJC from spliced mRNAs. Its association with the 40S ribosomal subunit prevents translation-independent EJC disassembly by restricting activity to translated mRNAs. WIBG interferes with NMD and enhances translation of spliced mRNAs, likely by antagonizing EJC functions.
RNA-binding has been reported (PubMed:14968132), though other studies (PubMed:19410547) did not detect RNA-binding activity independently of the EJC.
