Target Information
This gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor expressed in oligodendroglial tumors of the brain. The protein regulates ventral neuroectodermal progenitor cell fate and is involved in chromosomal translocation t(14;21)(q11.2;q22) associated with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Its chromosomal region on chromosome 21 may contribute to learning deficits associated with Down syndrome.
Tissue specificity:
- Expressed in brain, particularly in oligodendrocytes
- Strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas
- Weak to moderate expression in astrocytomas
- Variable expression in glioblastomas
