Target Information
Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) are components of post-Golgi membranes involved in membrane trafficking.
In fibroblasts, SCAMPs participate in recycling of cell surface receptors and endocytosis.
In neurons, they are associated with synaptic vesicles, secretion granules, and transporter vesicles.
SCAMPs consist of four central transmembrane regions and a cytoplasmic tail.
Among five known SCAMPs, SCAMPs 1–3 have N-terminal NPF repeats interacting with EH domain proteins, while SCAMPs 4–5 lack these repeats.
SCAMPs 1–4 are ubiquitously expressed, whereas SCAMP5 is brain-specific and expressed late in development, coinciding with mature synapse formation.
