Target Information
PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a chymotrypsin-like serine protease of the kallikrein family, produced by prostate epithelial cells and abundant in seminal fluid.
It can be detected in the sera of patients with prostatic carcinoma, predominantly complexed with alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT).
A higher proportion of PSA-ACT complex is found in prostate cancer than in benign prostatic hyperplasia.
PSA is used to confirm prostatic acinar cell origin in carcinoma and to differentiate from non-prostatic carcinoma mimics.
