Target Information

MMP9 (matrix metallopeptidase 9, GELB, CLG4B) is a matrix metalloproteinase belonging to a family of zinc and calcium-dependent endopeptidases that degrade extracellular matrix proteins. It is secreted as a 92 kDa zymogen, which upon cleavage becomes an active enzyme with a molecular weight of 82 kDa.

MMP9 contains:

• A gelatin-binding domain with three fibronectin type II units
• A catalytic domain with a zinc-binding site
• A proline-rich type V collagen-homologous domain
• A hemopexin-like domain

MMP9 is produced by monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, osteoclasts, and endothelial cells. It plays key roles in:

• Inflammatory responses
• Tissue remodeling and wound healing
• Tumor growth and metastasis

MMP9 contributes to skin carcinogenesis and degrades type IV and V collagens. Studies suggest its involvement in IL-8-induced mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells, tumor-associated tissue remodeling, and progression of idiopathic atrial fibrillation and aortic aneurysm.
