MTCO2는 미토콘드리아 전자 전달계의 마지막 효소인 사이토크롬 c 산화효소의 구성 요소로, 산화적 인산화를 구동합니다. 이 효소는 NADH와 succinate에서 유래한 전자를 산소로 전달하여 물을 생성하고, 막 전위 차를 형성하여 ATP 합성을 유도합니다. 사이토크롬 c 산화효소는 산소를 물로 환원시키는 반응을 촉매하며, 핵심 활성 부위는 heme A3와 copper B로 구성된 binuclear center(BNC)입니다.
