Target Information

Complex V, also known as F1F0 ATPase or ATP synthase, is highly conserved across species and functions as a transmembrane enzyme driving the reversible conversion of ADP and phosphate to ATP during oxidative phosphorylation. It operates via proton flux across membranes resulting from electron transfer. Although traditionally associated with mitochondria, ATP synthase has been identified on plasma membranes of various cells, functioning as receptors such as HDL or angiostatin receptors. The enzyme comprises two main sections: the soluble F1 ATP-ase and the membrane-embedded F0 ATP-ase. The F1 section includes α, β, γ, δ, and ε subunits, while F0 includes a, b, and c subunits. In mammals, the enzyme consists of 17 subunits, with five forming the F1 portion. Mutations in mitochondrial-encoded subunits of ATP synthase (Complex V) can lead to OXPHOS-related diseases.
