Target Information
Calpains, including Calpain 1 (CAPN1), are calcium-activated neutral proteases that are non-lysosomal and intracellular. Mammalian calpains include ubiquitous, stomach-specific, and muscle-specific proteins. The ubiquitous enzymes are heterodimers composed of distinct large catalytic subunits and a common small regulatory subunit. The CAPN1 gene encodes the large subunit of the ubiquitous enzyme calpain 1. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. CAPN1 is associated with diseases such as Spastic Paraplegia 76, Autosomal Recessive, and Spasticity.
