Target Information
The zona pellucida is an extracellular matrix surrounding the oocyte and early embryo, composed mainly of glycoproteins involved in fertilization and preimplantation development.
The ZP2 protein is a structural component that mediates secondary binding and penetration of acrosome-reacted spermatozoa. It contains:
- N-terminal signal peptide
- Conserved ZP domain
- Consensus furin cleavage site
- C-terminal transmembrane domain
Furin cleavage is hypothesized to release the mature protein for incorporation into the zona pellucida matrix, though its necessity remains controversial based on mouse studies.
