Target Information

The ubiquitin (Ub) pathway involves three sequential enzymatic steps that facilitate the conjugation of Ub and Ub-like molecules to specific protein substrates.

  1. Activation (E1 enzyme): ATP-dependent activation of the Ub C-terminus and assembly of multi-Ub chains.
  2. Conjugation (E2 enzyme): Ub-conjugating enzyme (E2) generates an intermediate Ub-E2 complex.
  3. Ligation (E3 enzyme): Ub-ligase (E3) catalyzes the transfer of Ub from E2 to the target protein substrate.

UBE2E3 (also known as UBCH9) catalyzes the covalent attachment of ubiquitin to other proteins and regulates transepithelial sodium transport in renal cells. It may also play a role in cell growth arrest. The UBE2E3 protein shuttles between the cytoplasm and nucleus in an IPO11-dependent manner and is ubiquitously expressed at low levels, with high expression in skeletal muscle.
