Target Information

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), also known as serum mannose-binding protein (MBP), initiates the lectin branch of the innate immune response by binding to pathogenic microorganisms and triggering complement fixation through its N-terminal collagen-like domain.
MBL interacts with MASP-1, MASP-2, and MASP-3 to activate the complement system. Mutations in MBL are linked to immunodeficiency due to impaired complement activation. MASP-3, an alternatively spliced product from the MASP-1 gene, may inhibit MASP-2 by competing for MBL binding.
