Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL40 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein; deletions in this gene may contribute to velo-cardio-facial syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome.
