Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS15 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S15P family. This protein is over twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with conserved 12S rRNA binding sites. Between human and mouse, MRPS15 is the least conserved among small subunit ribosomal proteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS15 are located on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
