Target Information

Mitochondrial protein that probably regulates the biogenesis and activity of mitochondria. It stimulates cardiolipin biosynthesis and binds cardiolipin-enriched membranes where it recruits and stabilizes certain proteins, including prohibitin. This may contribute to the organization of functional microdomains in mitochondrial membranes.

Through regulation of mitochondrial function, STOML2 may be involved in various biological processes including:

• Cell migration and proliferation
• T-cell activation
• Calcium homeostasis
• Cellular response to stress

It is required for mitochondrial hyperfusion, a pro-survival cellular response to stress leading to increased ATP production. STOML2 may also regulate functional domains at the plasma membrane and play a role in T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor signaling complex.
