Target Information
The WNT gene family consists of structurally related genes encoding secreted signaling proteins. These proteins are involved in oncogenesis and various developmental processes, including regulation of cell fate and patterning during embryogenesis.
WNT4 is the first signaling molecule shown to influence the sex-determination cascade. It encodes a protein with 98% amino acid identity to the mouse and rat Wnt4 proteins. WNT4, together with a nuclear receptor that antagonizes the testis-determining factor, plays a key role in female development and prevention of testis formation.
WNT4, along with WNT2 and WNT7B, may be associated with abnormal proliferation in breast tissue. Mutations in this gene can result in Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome and SERKAL syndrome.
