This gene encodes a member of the annexin family, a group of calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding proteins involved in cellular growth regulation and signal transduction. Annexin A2 functions as an autocrine factor that enhances osteoclast formation and bone resorption. The gene has three pseudogenes on chromosomes 4, 9, and 10, and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
