Target Information
Megsin (also known as SerpinB7 or TP55) is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which play a key role in maintaining glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor that may inactivate MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—enzymes responsible for extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of megsin can lead to mesangial cell proliferation and matrix expansion accompanied by immune complex deposition, suggesting its involvement in renal structure regulation and various nephropathies.
