Target Information
Cadherins are a family of calcium-dependent adhesion molecules that mediate cell-cell binding, essential for maintaining tissue structure and morphogenesis. Each cadherin has a large extracellular N-terminal domain with five homologous repeats, where the distal repeat determines binding specificity.
Cadherin-16 (Ksp-Cadherin) is a type I membrane protein expressed specifically in the kidney, localized to the basolateral membrane of renal tubular epithelial cells. The human Cadherin-16 gene maps to chromosome 16q21–proximal 16q22, while the mouse homolog is found in a syntenic region of distal chromosome 8.
