Target Information
This gene encodes the receptor for type 1 gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). It belongs to the seven-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family and is expressed on pituitary gonadotrope cells, lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate tissues. Upon GnRH binding, it activates a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system, leading to the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Mutations in this gene can cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH). Multiple transcript variants and isoforms exist due to alternative splicing and diverse transcription initiation sites.
