Target Information
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a multifactorial disease with both environmental and genetic causes. Genome-wide screening has identified several susceptibility loci for NIDDM within the human genome. A putative sugar transporter localized to chromosome 20q12–q13.1, one of the loci associated with NIDDM, shows strong resemblance to mammalian facilitative glucose transporters (GLUT). This protein is known as GLUT10 (HGMW-approved gene symbol SLC2A10) and is considered a candidate susceptibility gene involved in NIDDM.
