Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS22 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein unique to mammalian mitoribosomes and does not have a counterpart in prokaryotic or fungal-mitochondrial ribosomes. This gene lies telomeric to and is transcribed in the opposite direction from the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS22 is located on chromosome Xq.
