The protein encoded by this gene is a glycoprotein belonging to the pentraxin family, characterized by a pentameric organization. These proteins share significant sequence homology, likely due to gene duplication. The encoded protein binds to pathological amyloid cross-beta fold proteins, suggesting a chaperone-like role. It may also regulate chromatin degradation and has been shown to bind apoptotic cells early, implying involvement in apoptotic cell clearance in vivo.
